Cicely Berry

Internationally famous RSC Director of Voice Cicely Berry trained at Central School of Speech and Drama in London and joined the RSC in 1969 at the invitation of Trevor Nunn. She has been with the Company since that time and has been responsible for all voice and text work, working closely with actors and directors on all productions.

She has been deeply involved with education for the RSC, working extensively in schools as well as in prisons. Over the last thirty years, Cicely Berry has also organised drama workshops and lectured all over the world including Zimbabwe, Croatia, America, India and China. She is Artistic Associate of the New York based company Theatre for a New Audience.

She has written four books: Voice and the Actor (1973);  Your Voice and How to Use It (updated 1994); The Actor and the Text (updated 1993) and Text in Action (2002).

Cicely Berry directed Hamlet for the RNT Education Unit and King Lear for the RSC at the Other Place.  She co-directed Words, Words, Words in 1994 at The Other Place and the Barbican Pit. 

In addition to her RSC work, she participates in projects with a number of companies abroad. Cicely Berry was awarded an OBE in 1985 for her services to theatre and has received numerous other awards as well as two Honorary Doctorates (Birmingham University and Open University).
