Having been trained formerly in technical theatre, Martin started his career as a scenic artist. He moved into the field of lighting design and has lit shows both in the West-end and across Europe covering Opera, Musicals, Drama, and Events. He then moved into production management working at The Old Vic London, and on Whistle down the Wind in the west end.

In 1998 he became Technical Director of the Old Vic and spent time with Sir Peter Hall developing a new theatre season playing seven days a week. Martin moved to become Project Manager Exhibitions at the millennium dome for the celebration in 2000, working on three exhibition zones, Home Planet, Self Portrait and Money. This was followed by extensive freelance working in Europe and the UK before being appointed as Production Manager at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
