Masterclass exists to give young people the chance to work with, learn from and be inspired by leading theatre professionals. Vital to the ethos of Masterclass is that its events should be provided free of charge, in order that the widest number from all backgrounds can gain from taking part.

Masterclass was founded in 1998 when the Theatre Royal Haymarket set up a Trust to administer the programme and to raise funds to develop the initiative. Over the past nine years, Masterclass has supported 40,000 young people, who come from all over the UK to attend. Around 80% taking part aim for a career within the professional arts industry whilst for the remainder, theatre is an important stimulus for their creative and social development.

The Theatre Royal Haymarket provides the theatre space, its technical staff as well as an office and management resources. Masterclass staff, event costs, promotional costs and special projects need to be funded through external support.
