Join BAFTA award-winning actor Joanna Scanlan, and director Tania Black, as you collaborate to create a brand-new performance in just 2 hours. This practical Masterclass mines the very origins of theatre, exploring how the chorus can be used to create powerful moments of community.
Inspired by practitioners like Augusto Boal, Joanna Scanlan and Tania Black will issue a dilemma to participants in the form of a monologue. Participants will react in the moment, improvising an emotional response to the dilemma – through words and/or music. Their responses will then be recorded by our team of writers, as we work quickly and collaboratively towards a final sharing.
With a renewed commitment to community engagement from Arts Council England, this Masterclass is a must for anyone making work in the subsidised sector.

Biography
Joanna Scanlan
Joanna’s recent film credits include the award winning Afterlove, directed by Aleem Khan, for which she won the 2022 BAFTA Award and 2021 BIFA Award for Best Leading Actress.
Film credits include The Voyage of Dr Dolittle, Bridget Jones’ Baby (Universal), How to Build A Girl (Film4), Pin Cushion (BFI), How To Talk To Girls at Parties (See Saw Films), The Invisible Woman, The Testament of Youth, In The Loop (BBC Films), Get Santa (Scott Free), Bad Education The Movie (Cave Bear Prod), The Other Boleyn Girl, Stardust, Notes on a Scandal, The Girl With A Pearl Earring and Kinky Boots.
TV credits include The Larkins, McDonalds and Dodds (ITV), The Accident, Crazy Diamond, No Offence (CH4), Fungus the Bogeyman (SKY), The Turning written by Julia Davis, Dracula, Requiem, The Woman in White, Mapp & Lucia, Rev, Puppy Love, which Joanna also co-wrote, The Thick of It, Hold the Sunset and Getting On, for which Joanna was BAFTA nominated as Best Female Performer and as screenwriter (BBC). Getting On was also adapted for an American audience with HBO, with Joanna involved as an executive producer and guest star.
Stage credits include Cloud 9 (Almeida), Top Girls (Oxford Stage Co.), Vernon God Little (Young Vic) and Madame Bovary (Shared Experience).
Joanna has just wrapped on several new exciting projects including Apple, BBC and Netflix series and a Studiocanal film.
Tania Black
Tania is a co-founder of The Fish & Bicycle Theatre Company.
Tania is currently researching a performance PhD in ‘The Chorus of Contemporary Theatre’ and graduated with an MA in Text and Performance from RADA/Birbeck.
