Nicola T Chang: Inside the Sound Designer's Process
Masterclass
Date
12 August 2025
Time
2.00 - 3.30PM
Venue
Park90, London
Join acclaimed sound designer and composer Nicola T Chang (For Black Boys Who Have Considered Suicide When the Hue Gets Too Heavy, The Swell, A Playlist for the Revolution, Minority Report) for an in-depth Masterclass exploring the craft, complexity, and collaboration behind contemporary content-focused sound design.
Drawing on case studies from recent productions, Nicola will take you inside her process – from the earliest conversations in the rehearsal room to the final moments in tech. She’ll unpack how she approaches a script, develops a show’s sonic identity, and makes choices that support rhythm, mood, and dramaturgy.
The session will delve into the creative and technical decisions behind designing for different spaces and scales, the evolving relationship between sound and narrative, and how sound interacts with other design elements to shape the overall world of a production.
This Masterclass is ideal for theatre-makers, designers, and sound professionals looking to deepen their understanding of sound as a vital storytelling tool, as well as directors, creatives, performers, or sound artists looking for an insight into the process of embedding sound design into theatrical story-telling.
There will be time at the end for a Q&A with Nicola.
